Hard work with high energy a successful combination for director Denise

    Denise Broderick

THIS week’s High Flyer is Denise Broderick, president and managing director of speciality pharmaceutical company, Galen Ltd.

    What was your first job?

My career path has been incredibly varied and interesting which has prepared me for my position here at Galen but my first job was when I was 13 and I worked at the local village shop in Milford, Co Cork where I was born and raised. My first job in the pharmaceutical industry was as a hospital sales specialist with Novartis.

    What qualifications do you have?

I have a Bachelor of Biochemistry (Honours) from University College Cork and a PhD in Cancer Genetics from University College Dublin

What do you attribute your success to?

My parents instilled into me from a very young age the importance of education, working hard, always doing my best. These values have definitely attributed to my success.

How would you describe yourself to someone who’d never met you?

I am passionate, enthusiastic, kind and fun loving. I am hard working, with high energy and I smile a lot. I value deeply the people in my life and I do my best to be of service wherever I can.

Who do you look up to in business?

I admire Jeff Weiner, LinkedIn CEO for his style of leadership and how he advocates that the success of a business is enhanced by compassionate leadership and treating people with integrity and respect. I am also a fan of the innovative spirit of Richard Branson and how he is never afraid to fail therefore is always willing to try. I like to think I can bring some of those same traits with me as MD of Galen.

How do you get the best out of people who work for you?

I lead by example so I never ask anyone to do what I am not prepared to do myself. I empower people by trusting them, being respectful and assuming the best of them even when things are not going well.

If you could change one thing about doing business in Northern Ireland what would it be?

In my limited time working in Northern Ireland I have yet to experience any challenges and so far I am thoroughly enjoying it – I guess time will tell.

What website or app could you not do without?

That is an easy one for me as without a doubt it is Spotify. I love music and Spotify allows me to have music with me no matter where I am in the world

What was the last book you read?

I am an avid reader and normally I am reading three or four books at a time on my Kindle but the last one I read was Becoming Michelle Obama by Michelle Obama, which was a fantastic read.

    What car do you drive?

    I drive a BMW 4 Series Coupe.

Tell us something interesting about yourself.

I sing and play the guitar.

What’s your greatest passion outside work and family?

Being of service through coaching, mentoring and volunteer work.
