    You’ve just got a new job! Congratulations. Here are five tips from NIJobs.com to help you manage first day nerves and hit the ground running in your new role.

    It’s fair to say that no matter what level you are at in your career, the first few weeks in a new job can be stressful. However, it is the final hurdle to clear at the end of a successful job search.  

    Every business does things differently, so not only do you have to get to know new faces and names, you will also have to navigate through a new way of doing things. 

    Here are NIJobs.com with five tips to help you survive first day nerves and thrive in your new role.

    Preparation is key 

    A small piece of preparation will smooth the path of your first day.  Before you start get in touch with your new manager and ask for suggestions on how best to prepare. For example, is there material on the organisation or its products that you can read ahead of time?  

    It is also a good idea to get your paperwork ready. Check if you are required to bring in your documentation such as your P45, National Insurance number, and photo ID. 

    It sounds obvious but find out exactly where you are expected to go. Some of the larger companies have offices dotted across NI so be sure you turn up where you supposed to go. Then get a good night’s sleep and be sure to arrive on time. 

    Say hello 

    In most cases, a manager or colleague will show you around and introduce you. It’s unlikely that you will remember the names of everyone you meet but you should aim to memorise the names of the people you will be working with directly and, of course, your manager. Over time you will get to know everyone in the company so don’t stress yourself out too much trying to remember everyone. 

    Management style 

    One of the first things you should find out is how your new manager likes to communicate. Your last manager might have liked face-to-face meetings, but your new boss may prefer a more impersonal approach such as emails and instant messages. This is one area where you must show initiative because no one else is going to do it for you. 

    Know your limits 

    No matter how well you know your industry or your job, you are still a newbie to this company.  It will take you time to find your feet, so it can be a good idea to ask your boss for a regular meeting just to confirm you are on the right path and delivering what is expected from you. 

    This is particularly important if you are working through probationary period.  It’s better to correct and adjust as you go rather than find out you’ve been on the wrong track from the beginning. If you put in the work during the first weeks, then it should be plain sailing.

    Be a team player 

    ‘Company culture’ is fast becoming one of the most important considerations for Northern Ireland organisations. After all, a happy workforce is a productive one, so your managers and colleagues will expect new hires to try to fit in so be sure to get involved in teambuilding exercises and social occasions.
