Excellent opportunity for Receptionist/Optical Assistant who will support and assist the owner and other staff with the general running of the optical practice.

JOB TITLE: Receptionist/Optical Assistant

RESPONSIBLE TO: Practice Optometrist (Maureen McGonigle)


  • Supporting and assisting the owner and other staff with the general running of the optical practice in the following areas:
  • General administrative and telephone duties
  • Maximising the use of appointments
  • Sales/payment handling
  • Assisting patients with frame selection
  • Assisting patients with contact lens trials
  • Stock control
  • Cleaning and maintaining appearance of the practice
  • Window display and marketing of the practice
  • Undertake all other reasonable duties and training that may be requested by the owner, as and when required.


  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Reasonable maths ability and accurate spelling are essential.
  • IT experience and competency working with computers.
  • (If you are shortlisted for interview you will be asked to complete basic checks on sums, spelling and computer use as part of the interview process.)
  • Experience of reception and/or retail work may be an advantage.
  • A friendly helpful disposition and the ability to provide ‘front-line’ customer care services to the general public on a daily basis.                                                                      
  • The ability to grasp ideas quickly and to work on own initiative as part of a team, with a quiet confidence.
  • Smart appearance at all times.
  • Non smoker

Hours:  Full or part time (minimum 25 hrs) considered                                

Normal weekday hours are between 9-6.00pm Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. Full or part time positions will both include regular weekday afternoons, at least one late night (until 8.30pm) and Saturdays.  Please only apply for the position if you are willing to work hours that include these shifts as these are our busiest times.

Wages:  Initial wages will be minimum wage although there would be the opportunity in the future to improve on these wages with experience and willingness to undergo further training and study towards Optical Receptionist and/or Dispensing Optician qualifications (see Association of Dispensing Opticians website for details of relevant distance learning courses and their requirements).
