 Job Description

Job Title: Head of Energy Contract Type: Permanent; Full-Time Salary: Salary will be confirmed with successful candidate on appointment Closing Date: 10am, Monday 30th September 2019

About the Role:

Energy, specifically electrical energy, is one of the largest areas of NI Water’s operational expenditure. When considering the future of energy at NI Water, it would be negligent to ignore the significant Climate Change and Sustainability statements now emanating from Central Government and the Utility Regulator – committing to achieving “net-zero” greenhouse gases by 2050.

Although Northern Ireland (NI) has no equivalent net-zero policy in place, NI will be expected to make a meaningful contribution to UK carbon reduction commitments. With this in mind, NI Water needs to maintain momentum on our Price Control 15 (PC15) energy programme – committing to saving £4.1m on an annual recurring basis by 2021; and committing to developing well-informed and co-ordinated investment decisions on cost-efficient energy consumption reduction and emission mitigation projects going forward into Price Control 21 (PC21) and beyond.

The role of the Head of Energy is critical in maintaining this momentum and identifying and prioritising investment opportunities; understanding a complex evolving energy landscape; NI Water’s energy use, fuel composition and emissions within that landscape; and ensuring NI Water stays on target to deliver our long-term 2050 Energy Strategy objectives. The Head of Energy will be required to provide strategic energy leadership, manage the NI Water Energy Team, Business Improvement (BI) resource and external resources, and influence internal and external stakeholders to obtain the necessary commitment to deliver NI Water’s sustainable energy future.

Job Activities:

  • Manage the strategic direction and delivery of all energy procurement activity in support of NI Water’s 2050 Energy Strategy, utilising internal and external resources where appropriate.
  • From an energy, cost and emissions perspective, ensure a co-ordinated approach to the development of NI Water assets via close liaison with the Heads of Function and their teams in Water and Wastewater, Asset Delivery, Finance & Regulation, and Business Analytics.
  • Fulfil the role of Contract Owner for relevant energy contracts.
  • Ensure that Health and Safety policies and procedures are embedded in all work activities, and that there remains a sustained commitment to NI Water’s Health and Safety standards.
