Primary Purpose: Technology development project and line management

In order to further develop our dynamic team, we are actively recruiting a Project/Process Manager to lead our technology development team and drive the delivery of innovative new camera and spectroscopy solutions to the academic research community.

As a key leader, the new product development manager will work beside technical leads to ensure quality, feature and performance differentiation and optimal time to market of scientific solutions being developed at Andor.  You are seeking a challenge and have an excellent work ethic.  You are personally driven to meet objectives with a focus on quality and delivery. You enjoy what you do and you should champion improvement initiatives throughout the development team and into the wider Andor engineering community.  You have a serious passion for outstanding customer experience and drive an ease of use agenda.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Recruit, manage and mentor to build a high performing development team and lead the team to provide innovative, robust solutions to complex technical problems
  • Project management including requirement gathering, task estimation, release planning, resource scheduling, scheduling equipment, risk management and progress reporting.
  • Lead decision-making, cultivate collaboration, and resolve blocking issues between engineers and teams.
  • Work with all stakeholders to define release plans and ensure timely execution of projects, tracking progress of teams, and providing status updates across multiple projects to the Director of Engineering
  • Constantly evaluating and adjusting architectural roadmap as necessary while innovating and optimizing engineering processes and standards.
  • Champion ease of use and excellent customer experience throughout the development team and through the wider engineering team
  • Work with other teams in Andor and across the OI group to align processes, development techniques and look for opportunities for reuse and collaboration.
  • Lead by example and setting a clear culture of teamwork, success, high expectations, and customer centric focus.
  • Facilitate technical support to end customers, product support, sales, operations and other customers (internal and external).
  • Assist with the development of a product strategy.
  • Contribute to strategic planning for the Engineering department.
  • Foster continuous improvement throughout the functional development processes
  • Build working relationships with other key departments and customers
  • Set an example for commitment, resilience and the ability to operate effectively under pressure.
  • Occasional travel to other offices and customer sites
  • Any other duties as may be required from time to time by your line manager

Essential criteria

Education/Qualifications

  • An honours degree(minimum 2:1) in a computer, technical or numeric subject such as Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics or Physics

Professional Skills/abilities

Essential criteria

  • 10+ years of hands-on engineering experience
  • Experience of management of engineering teams
  • Clear passion for customer experience and ease of use
  • Demonstrable experience in presenting complex ideas to senior management
  • Strong analytical and communication skills as well as strong planning/organising skills
  • Understanding of all stages of lifecycle development from requirements capture through to application delivery and support
  • Experience of all stages of project management including requirement gathering and creating detailed project plans
  • Evidence of contribution to developing best practice and process
  • Strong customer empathy and focus
Desirable criteria
  • Successful management of at least 1 major development project through all stages of the development lifecycle from requirements capture through to delivery and support
  • Experience of engineering development lifecycle
  • Experience in leading a team

Special Circumstances

  • Able to work outside core hours when required.
  • Occasional International Travel

Hours: 37.5 hours.  Flexi time – core hours 9.30am – 4.30pm Monday – Thursday with possible 1pm finish on Fridays
