Biosearch are currently seeking Food and Water Microbiology Laboratory Technicians to join our dynamic, hardworking team.

JOB TITLE                      Laboratory Technician

REPORTING TO              Laboratory Supervisor



This role will involve supporting the Laboratory Supervisor and the rest of the team in the day to day testing of samples according to documented methods.  




The role will train to ensure:


  • Excellent basic techniques

  • Appropriate use of equipment

  • Sufficient production of media

  • Preparation of samples in line with company protocols

  • Processing of samples in line with company protocols

  • Reading and confirmation of samples in line with company protocols

  • Accurate records of results

  • Effective communication with all employees

  • Reporting any anomalous results or situations to Laboratory Supervisor

  • Housekeeping activities are adhered to

  • Prevention of cross contamination

  • Active participation in method development  

  • Appropriate confidentiality at all times

  • Company policy is complied with and supported

  • Health and Safety procedures are adhered to within the laboratory

  • Sample collection from clients premises (weekends only for Food Department)

  • Any other duties are carried out as appropriate


Other information


  • Salary starts at £17,000 per annum with a 6 months’ probation period
  • Holiday entitlement begins at 21 days per annum, in addition to 8 public/bank holidays. Holiday entitlement increases by one day for each year of completed service to a maximum of 25 days.
  • Public holidays will be worked as part of a rota and paid in addition to salary stated and day in lieu will also be given.

  • Weekend work will be worked as part of a rota and paid in addition to salary stated.

2.    Education & knowledge


The candidate should have a good standard of English


The candidate should hold GCSE English and Mathematics (or equivalent).


Degree (or equivalent) in a biological science subject



Knowledge of laboratory accreditation systems

3.    Experience

Experience in microbiological techniques and culture of organisms


Experience in the use of Windows based computer packages



Previous laboratory experience


Full driving licence (Food Micro Only)


4.    Circumstances

A flexible approach to working hours is required due to the operation of laboratory shift system
