Financial Controller


Specific Purpose Role (Maternity Cover) 12-18 Months (40 Hrs)

Salary Range- £43,000-£50,000 (Management)

firmus energy is responsible for the construction and operation of a natural gas network of over 1,400km across 30 cities, towns and villages across Northern Ireland. As well as connecting over 42,000 customers across its own licensed area, firmus energy also competes in the competitive natural gas market in Greater Belfast, where it also supplies over 50,000 customers.

The role:

Reporting to the Finance Director, the Financial Controller is responsible for the management of all finance related activity in firmus energy.  firmus activities span gas distribution networks, regulated gas supply and unregulated gas supply across Northern Ireland.

Job Purpose:

To provide financial leadership and contribute proactively to the growth and development of the organisation’s activities, developing and managing the finance functions in the exercise of financial control and the provision of financial advice and guidance to senior management in support of the overall business goals and objectives.

The position encompasses the management and reporting of the business KPIs, budgetary planning and review and support, tax compliance and planning, as well as external statutory reporting, and ensuring compliance with financial borrowing covenants.

The role will ensure that all necessary financial, management and taxation information is provided to relevant stakeholders (including shareholders, lenders and relevant government and tax authorities).

Main duties and responsibilities include:

  • The review, maintenance and development of financial policies and procedures
  • Budgeting and Forecasting
  • Taxation
  • Establishment and management of the finance function
  • Financial Compliance 
  • Business Support (Internal and External)

  • A recognised accounting qualification (e.g. ACA, ACMA, ACCA).
  • Educated to degree level in an appropriate discipline.
  • At least 5 years post qualification experience, together with a solid understanding of technical accounting, financial, company and taxation legislation.
  • Experience in working at the highest levels of financial management in a large complex organisation
  • Experience of working in a utility or in the energy industry or similar environment though not essential, would be an advantage.
  • Understanding of business issues and drivers with the ability to analyse and resolve business issues quickly.
  • Excellent IT skills; experience in working with a range of finance systems is desirable.
  • Strong leadership and management skills with a proven track record leading a high performance team.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills aligned with our brand values.
  • Ability to work on own initiative and to prioritise workload.
  • Full UK driving licence.
