EirGrid holds licences as the independent electricity Transmission System Operator (TSO) and Market Operator (MO) in the wholesale trading system in Ireland, and is the owner of the System Operator Northern Ireland (SONI Ltd), the licensed TSO and market operator in Northern Ireland. The Single Electricity Market Operator (SEMO) is part of the EirGrid Group, and operates the Single Electricity Market on the island of Ireland.

Operations, Planning and Innovation (OPI)

The Operations, Planning and Innovation function comprises highly skilled professionals with backgrounds in engineering and business/commerce.

The core responsibility of OPI is to manage the operation of the power system ensuring that the lights stay on in a secure, reliable, sustainable and economic way. OPI is also responsible for the long term sustainable development of the transmission system in order to meet the future needs of all users of electricity on the island of Ireland. Creating a culture of continuous improvement that drives technical and process innovation is central to delivering on these roles.

OPI delivers services for all electricity users on the island of Ireland. It seeks to meet the needs of large energy producers and consumers connected directly to the transmission system and all users connected to the transmission system via the distribution system.

The Innovation team, which sits within OPI is responsible for driving three primary programmes of activity DS3, Innovation and EU-SysFlex. These programmes of activity are the cornerstone of renewable integration in Europe, Ireland and Northern Ireland delivering technological, system, policy and procedural solutions.

Within the Innovation team, EirGrid Group is seeking to fill the position of Senior Engineer. This exciting opportunity requires an individual with a broad set of skills which are complementary to power system operational analysis and solution development. The role holder will assist the team in addressing system, technological, policy and procedural challenges associated with the large scale integration of renewables in Ireland and Northern Ireland and at a European level.

The role requires individual who has a proven track record of solving problems, excellent interpersonal skills and is capable of working in a high paced challenging environment.

Job Relationships
Reporting to the Manager, Innovation

Main Responsibilities

– Define, develop and implement a number of power system operational projects.
– Projects may include the following;
o Power system studies and analysis.
o Power system operational tool development and implementation.
o Power system operational policy, procedure, protocol development and implementation.

– Preparation of written technical and progress reports for internal and external stakeholders.
– Preparation and delivery of presentations to internal and external stakeholders.
– In executing the role, the senior engineer will be required to:
o Collaborate with and assist the innovation team in achieving its objectives across the programmes of Innovation, DS3 and EU-Syflex.
o Liaise with programme stakeholders, both internally and externally to gain a full understanding of stakeholder requirement. In delivering stakeholder requirements the role holder must have the capacity to manage expectations and clearly explain rationale and justification for course of action.
o Assist in the development of system operation policy, procedures and protocols to facilitate programme objectives.
o Review and update internal system operation policy, procedures and protocols to ensure best practice is followed and maintained.
o Deliver projects and tasks in line with expected quality and timeframe.
o Stay up to date with national and international developments to ensure EirGrid Group maintains its position at the cutting edge of system operation and renewable integration.
o Manage own performance through skills development, delivering on targets and seeking opportunities to learn and develop.
o Demonstrate technical and personal leadership in field of expertise.
o Continuously look to improve how we work and to be more effective in executing our role within the EirGrid Group.
o Be capable of translating technical subject matter for non-technical audiences.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience

(a) Essential:
– Engineering degree or equivalent with a minimum of 4 years’ experience.
– Good technical skills and knowledge of electrical power systems.
– Experience of carrying out power system analysis, studies and/ or working with power system analysis tools.
– Ability to work in a collaborative manner as part of a team.
– Possess excellent organisational, interpersonal and communication skills.
– Strong analytical and problem solving abilities.
– The ability to make decisions and recommendations in a changing and dynamic environment.
– Ability to lead and take responsibility for small/medium projects.
– A dynamic and flexible work ethic.

(b) Desirable:
– Good technical knowledge of electrical power systems.
– Power system study and analysis experience including:
o Steady state load flow, voltage and short circuit analysis
o Transient and dynamic voltage and frequency stability
o Electromagnetic transients analysis
o Power system economic analysis (dispatch, losses and lifetime cost analysis).
– Experience of working with tools such as:
o PSS/E, Matlab, Power Factory, Plexos, Alternative Transient Program (ATP), Powertech DSA (TSAT and VSAT).
– Appreciation of energy policy objectives and legislation at a National and Europe level.
– Knowledge of national and European energy policy, market design and regulation driving the evolution of the industry.
– Appreciation of technology evolution which could bring transformational disruption to the industry.
– Experience of working within a similar environment.
